Step-by-Step Instructions: Launching Office Applications in Safe Mode

Method 1: Using the CTRL Key

  • Close any running instances of the Office application you wish to launch.
  • Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard.
  • While holding the CTRL key, double-click the shortcut icon for the Office application (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) on your desktop or in the Start Menu.
  • A prompt will appear saying: “You’re holding down the CTRL key. Do you want to start [Application] in Safe Mode?”
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • The application will open in Safe Mode. You will typically see “Safe Mode” in the application's title bar.

Method 2: Using Command Line Parameters

  • Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
  • Type the command for the Office application you want to start in Safe Mode, then press Enter or click OK:
  • Microsoft Word: winword /safe
  • Microsoft Excel: excel /safe
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: powerpnt /safe
  • Microsoft Outlook: outlook /safe
  • Microsoft Access: msaccess /safe
  • Microsoft Publisher: mspub /safe
  • Microsoft Visio: visio /safe

This will launch the selected Office application in Safe Mode, as indicated in the window’s title bar.

Method 3: Creating a Dedicated Safe Mode Shortcut

  • Right-click on your desktop or in a folder and select New > Shortcut.
  • In the location field, type the full path to the application executable followed by /safe. For example:
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WINWORD.EXE /safe

Note: The actual path may vary depending on your Office version and installation directory.

Click Next, assign a name (e.g., “Word Safe Mode”), and click Finish.

Double-click the new shortcut to launch the application directly in Safe Mode whenever needed.

How to Exit Safe Mode

  • Close the Office application that is currently running in Safe Mode.
  • Reopen the application as you normally would, without holding the CTRL key or using the /safe command.
  • The application will now launch in regular mode with all features and customizations enabled.
